MASH

Medical Application for Science of Health

Free 2 week day-program in the summer

Mercy Fort Smith – June 4rd – June 14th

Baptist Fort Smith – July 1st – July 12th

MASH is a two-week summer program hosted at hospitals throughout the territory for students interested in pursuing healthcare careers. Students will be able to explore various careers in healthcare through shadowing, hands on learning activities, distinguished speakers, and much more!

Age requirements vary based on program but generally include current 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. Please find additional information in the attached letter. The program is provided at no cost to students through generous grants from Arkansas Farm Bureau and HRSA.

During the two weeks, you will take part in the following activities:

  • Receive CPR training and certification

  • Maneuver through the heart while a surgeon directs their dissection

  • Shadow seven departments in a local medical facility including surgery and the ER

  • Receive education about personal choices such as Nutrition, Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Organ Donation and more

  • Tour a medical school campus

  • Much, much more!

CHAMPS is a shortened version of MASH with the same sorts of activities, shadowing opportunities, and guest speakers but it lasts one seek instead of two. Conway Regional is currently the only hospital within my territory which is offering CHAMPS camp options. They have 2 camps this year with separate applications for each of their camps. The program is provided at no cost to students through generous grants from Arkansas Farm Bureau and HRSA.

Hands on Healthcareis a one day program in the Spring designed to give students a first-hand account of what a career in various fields would be like with hands on activities in each department led by faculty and professionals. This gives an alternative opportunity for students who are not eligible for MASH to still be able to learn first-hand about various healthcare career options on a smaller scale, as well, but does not preclude students who are eligible from attending MASH if they successfully apply for both.  The events are currently being hosted by ATU Ozark and UCA in collaboration with UAMS West and are also 100% free to students.

To qualify for this program, you must possess a minimum GPA of 2.75, have completed Biology, and be committed to attending the full two weeks to apply for this program. Many students apply, but limited spots are available. You are chosen by a committee based on academics, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, teacher recommendations, personal essay, and work ethic. You must also demonstrate scholastic ability, show a desire to become a team player and express interest in pursuing a career in the medical field. All details are found on the application.

Students accepted are required to attend Monday-Friday, 8-4 pm. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided. IMPORTANT! Please notify the M*A*S*H Director of any food allergies or other dietary restrictions, if accepted.

This program is located at either Baptist or Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith. We do not provide transportation or housing for this program. Students selected should make arrangements for their own transportation.

This is a FREE program for students, thanks to community donations, support from the M*A*S*H Partnership and a grant from the Blue & You Foundation.
