The Junior Leadership Academy (JLA) was created by the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce and is supported by the regional business community. JLA is a program for students that desire the opportunity to learn more about Fort Smith and the opportunities available in our city. Students will meet community leaders from area businesses, government agencies, and civic organizations. Students will be introduced into an environment designed to enhance and develop their leadership skills which will benefit them throughout the rest of their life.

Where ya going Wednesday? In participation with the Arkansas College Application Campaign, we are highlighting colleges during the month of October and encouraging seniors to apply. Every Wednesday this month, staff will wear college shirts to support the campaign.
Class of 2019 - Need help completing the FAFSA?
Financial Aid Reps from UAFS will be in the SHS Library during Parent/Teacher Conferences to assist students and families with their 2019-20 FAFSA applications. You don't have to be planning to attend UAFS, their reps are here to help you regardless of where you plan to attend. Parent/Teacher Conferences are Tuesday, October 16th and Thursday, October 18th from 3:30 to 6:30 pm. 2017 Income Tax Information will be used to file the FAFSA.

Tutoring
- NEW 2018-2019 School Year After school tutoring program for homework help and ACT prep. Tutoring and test prep will begin on Tuesday, October 23rd in the library and library classroom from 3:15 - 4:00 p.m.; Monday-Thursday each week.
- SHS Mu Alpha Theta Members provide tutoring in various subject areas. Interested students or parents may contact the counselor's office for a list of student tutors. Prices range from $10 to $20 per tutoring session.
- Several SHS teachers are available for tutoring. Student's should ask his/her teacher when they are available for tutoring.
- Khan Academy - Students can make use of Khan's extensive library of content, including interactive challenges, assessments, and videos from any computer with access to the web.
Study Tips
Future Agent in Training (FAIT) program
*Will be held April 12, 19 and 26, 2019 at the Fort Smith Resident Agency.
The Little Rock Field Office FAIT program will be held in Fall, 2019, dates TBD.
Completed application and essays must be sent via e-mail to the FBI, Fort Smith Resident Agency attention
carussell@fbi.gov or faxed to 479-788-0370. Applications are due no later than 02/08/2019. Applications will not be
accepted after the deadline. All applicants will be notified of their status upon final selection. Questions regarding this program
may be directed to our Fort Smith Resident Agency at 479-573-0702.
Requirements:
Student is a United States Citizen.
□ Student is currently enrolled in an accredited high school. If home schooled, the student is recognized by their
school district. (Students graduating from an accredited high school in the spring of 2019 are eligible to apply.)
□ Student must be 16 to 19 years old at the time of the Future Agent in Training course (April 12, 2019).
□ Student has a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher. (or Student may request special consideration with documentation from
school official)
□ Student has completed two essays (see section VII).
□ Student understands they must be present each day of the FAIT program and they will be responsible for their
transportation to and from the FBI Fort Smith Resident Agency. (FAIT program hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
□ Student is not currently involved in ANY criminal proceedings (not to include traffic violations).

UA Little Rock is inviting you to Discover preview day FREE for all high school juniors and seniors. Discover includes interactive sessions, campus activities hosted by student organizations, and plenty of UA Little Rock swag to go around. There will also be two $500 scholarships given away at the opening session and a social media scholarship contest.
We'll also help you get the college application process started! The $40 application fee will be waived for any high school senior who applies for admission at Discover. We'll begin at 9:00 am in the Jack Stephens Center, spend the day seeing what you want, and wrap up by 2:00 pm. Getting on campus and seeing what it's really like to be a Trojan is the perfect way to see if UA Little Rock is the place for you!

Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design
DESIGN CAMP 2019
Design Camp offers the chance to learn about the design professions through hands-on projects, tours, and discussions led by architecture, landscape architecture and interior design faculty of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and collaborate with peers in a fun and creative studio environment while they walk with you through the design process.
Registration will open in February.
Cost for the day camps in Fayetteville, Hot Springs, Little Rock, Wilson, and El Dorado is $325 through April 8 and $375 from April 9 to May 24. Registration will end May 24. Cost for the Bentonville camp at the Amazeum will be $265 for Amazeum members and $335 for nonmembers.

OVERNIGHT PROGRAM
On Monday, March 4–Tuesday, March 5, 2019, we will welcome a small group of high school juniors with an expressed interest in the humanities to our undergraduate Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland. This is an incredible opportunity for your top humanities students to spend 24 hours on our campus and meet with current students and faculty. Students accepted to the Humanities Overnight Program are representative of our university values of intellectual freedom and collaborative innovation and would thrive within our academic culture.
This expenses-paid program will include opportunities to learn more about the humanities experience at Hopkins, sit in on classes, meet current professors who are experts in their fields and attend a college essay writing workshop led by our admissions office and faculty from one of our humanities departments. Participants will stay overnight in on-campus housing. Meals, lodging, and transportation to and from campus will be paid for by the university.
How to nominate your student(s)
We are asking counselors and teachers to nominate academically strong juniors with an interest in the humanities for this program. Strong candidates are students who are taking a rigorous course load during their junior year (particularly in English, history, or other humanities-focused classes) and are succeeding academically. These should be promising students you feel would thrive in an academic culture like ours.

MASH
Medical Application for Science of Health
Free 2 week day-program in the summer
MASH, Medical Applications of Science for Health, is a two-week summer enrichment program for high school students interested in pursuing a medical career.
This year’s MASH camps will take place:
Mercy Fort Smith – June 4th – June 15th
Sparks Fort Smith – June 25th – July 6th
Mena Regional Medical Center – June 18th – June 29th
St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center Russellville – June 4th – June 15th
Conway Regional Health Systems – July 23rd – August 3rd
During the two weeks, you will take part in the following activities:

Receive CPR training and certification

Maneuver through the heart while a surgeon directs their dissection

Shadow seven departments in a local medical facility including surgery and the ER

Receive education about personal choices such as Nutrition, Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Organ Donation and more

Tour a medical school campus

To qualify for this program, you must possess a minimum GPA of 2.75, have completed Biology, and be committed to attending the full two weeks to apply for this program. Many students apply, but limited spots are available. You are chosen by a committee based on academics, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, teacher recommendations, personal essay, and work ethic. You must also demonstrate scholastic ability, show a desire to become a team player and express interest in pursuing a career in the medical field. All details are found on the application. Completed applications for Fort Smith Programs are due no later than Friday, March 23rd and can be submitted by fax, mail, or hand delivery.
