BYU Independent Study

  • Course Credit is transferable to SHS.

  • Students register for a course online and are mailed course materials the same day and students may begin the course as soon as materials are received. After submitting all of the course assignments, a final exam is given with a certified proctor, usually school personnel.

  • After the student has completed all lessons and exams, a course completion notice will be sent to SHS. Students must also request that a transcript be sent to the SHS registrar, Ms. Calhoun.

  • The cost may vary from course to course. A 0.5 credit will cost approximately $121. It's important that students visit with his or her counselor before selecting  a course.

  • Enrollment and general information may be found at http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/

Rank in Class

Rank in class is determined two ways, a local rank and a state rank.  Local rank will be used to determine number one and number two in the class and will be reported to colleges on paper transcripts and through counselor/college communication.  State rank will be reported when transcripts are electronically transmitted.  Rank is affected by level of courses (AP, PreAP, or Regular) and grades

Local rank is determined by total quality points.  AP A's=5.0   PreAP A's=4.5  Regular A's 4.0 and so on.  The total points are not divided by number of classes, so the level of classes, grades, and number of classes are the major determinants of this rank.  Study halls and no credit classes negatively impact Local Rank

State rank is determined by GPA.  AP A's =5.0  Regular and Pre AP A's =4.0
